What are the most common types of Hollywood animals that live in attics?

The simple answer to that is, anything that can get in your attic will probably attempt to take up residence, you should realize that your attic even with you and your family living right below it looks very appealing to any Florida animal that finds it. It is dark, it is dry, it is warm and there is proverbially a ton of nesting materials, what more can any critter ask for, the only thing is a regular food supply and that is probably right downstairs from where it is. There is what the professional animal control people call their top 10 list of attic dwellers, and it is:

1. squirrels
2. raccoons
3. rats
4. snakes
5. possums
6. bats
7. hedgehogs
8. birds
9. lizards
10. mice

The list is not in order, it is just a list. If you happen to get a Hollywood snake in your attic them with the exception of bats all of the rest of those on the list will quickly leave and not return for a considerable length of time. Bats are not overly afraid of snakes because generally they can get out of reach of most snakes and the young bats are also in the same position. If you think you have a snake in your attic I would suggest you call your local animal control and get them to come out and see what type of snake it is, if it is venomous then they will remove it, if it is not they will leave it alone and so should you, nonvenomous snakes are actually helpful to humans because while ever it is in your attic you would not get any other pests because they are as afraid of the snake as you are.

Generally squirrels, Florida raccoons, possums and hedgehogs only come into attics to give birth and rear their young, which means the single animal you have in your attic is a female. In most jurisdictions the only time you can legally do anything to the female is before she gives birth or after the babies are mobile and following her around. To either catch her and relocated or to kill her while she has babies in the nest is considered animal cruelty towards the babies because without her they will most probably either die of dehydration or starvation.

Some Hollywood animals, like bats, are fully protected species by federal law in the United States, that means if you want to remove a bat colony from your attic you must remove the whole colony and you must do it without injuring a single animal, most professionals will not even attempt this and they have permits. What they recommend is, waiting for the bats to migrate each they do every six months, sealing up all the entrances and exits so they cannot get back in and then cleaning up the roof space and lying chemical repellents just in case you missed a tiny hole.
