Hollywood Wildlife Education: Do Rats Bite Sleeping Babies?
Among all the rumors you hear about rats, one of the scariest is that they bite sleeping babies. Most stories will actually tell you that rats will bite humans in general, especially while they are sleep. Since babies are small and helpless, they seem like a logical target. If you want to know the truth, the quick answer is that although it is unlikely to happen, a rat may bite a sleeping baby.
When Rats Bite
Rats very rarely bite humans unless they are provoked. This means that if you are asleep, the chances that you will be bitten are slim, whether you are a baby, an adult, or an elderly person. Despite this, rat bites are possible while asleep. Most experts assume that if a baby or someone else is bitten in their sleep, there is no aggression meant in it. Instead, the rat is simply searching for food and thinks for some reason that the baby may have it.
Food Residue
The assumption is that if a baby is bitten by a rat, they may possibly have some of food residue on their skin or clothing. Most likely, the rat will smell the residue and try to get to the food. Some people claim the rats think the sleeping baby is the food sources, while others claim that the rats know they just hold this little bit of food. Their argument is that the rat is trying to lick or chew off the food on the sleeping baby.
Preventing Rat Bites
Luckily, you can further reduce the already slim chances of your baby getting bitten by a rat while asleep. To do this, just make your home as unappealing as possible to rats. The easiest way to do so is keep it clean, storing food in closed containers in the kitchen. If the rats don’t see any food sources, they are unlikely to turn your home into their dwelling. You should also make sure that the rats don’t have a way of getting into your home. This involves checking for potential entry points and sealing any holes you find. You can also reduce the risk of a rat biting your baby in search of food by making sure he is always thoroughly clean before taking a nap.
What To Do If Bitten
Although it is unlikely that rats will bite your sleeping baby, you should still know what to do if it does happen. First, remember to stay calm. The chances of a rat having rabies are incredibly small. Despite this, you should still take your baby to the doctor to have the bite inspected. You will have to watch him carefully for ten days or longer to make sure there is no negative reaction, possibly with a follow up trip to the doctor.
