What to do about a trap shy Hollywood rodent?
Trap shy Hollywood rodents are quite common, this usually occurs when an animal has been caught once or twice already and then released and has come back home, trying to catch it again will become harder and harder because the animal learns that going into that trap for that free meal becomes quite a bad experience. Also with some species like mice, they seem to be able to tell their mates how they stole the bait and lived to tell the tale, this is been proven by studies in which a mouse stole the bait and soon afterwards all the other mice were trying this technique on the trap.
There are plenty of videos online, especially of Florida rats, that are obviously trap shy, they are so cautious and move so slowly and are constantly looking around them that it is obvious they are expecting something bad to happen. There are even videos showing some rats triggering the trap from a safe position before grabbing the bait and taking off, there is even videos of the same rat doing this a few times. After watching a couple of these videos anyone about to go on a rat or mouse trapping campaign will realize they really need to up their game, these animals are neither stupid or easy to catch.
That said a lot of the professionals have a particular method they use to capture and kill trap shy Hollywood animals. What they do is they put a number of traps down with bait but the traps are not set, so when the animals find them they can take the bait and nothing happens. After doing this up to five times the animal will just see the trap, run over to it and grab the bait, now you set the trap but when the animal grabs the bait the trap which is now set, kills it.
Professionals also say that generally if you use the right bait even trap shy Florida animals will not be able to resist trying to get the bait and if the trap has been set properly they cannot win. A simple thing that professionals do sometimes if they are losing baits and not trapping animals, they would actually tie the bait onto the trigger plate with a piece of cotton, this will prevent the animal from lifting the bait long enough for the trap to be sprung in most cases.
